"Don’t worry, I haven’t changed my mind, I just wanted to talk to you about when I would start working down at the harbor." George leaned back in his chair and looked at her for a long moment, trying to figure out what the younger woman’s concerns were."Well, Morgan, I figured you could start whenever you want. There’s going to be a bit of a transition period anyways." The dark-haired woman propped her hip on the edge of the desk and stared down at her clasped hands for a long moment.
"If it’s alright with you, George, I’d like to put it off for a week or so," she began quietly. "I know that we’ve already found our home, but I know that I would like to help Allison get things arranged to her liking before leaving her alone all day." George nodded in agreement and opened his mouth to speak, frowning and holding his tongue as Morgan lifted cloudy blue eyes to meet his. "I also want to take her back up to the cabin for a few days."
"Is everything well between the two of you?" Morgan looked over her shoulder at Isabelle as the older woman moved gracefully across the room. George smiled at his wife and tucked her hand in his before turning an expectant gaze on the young woman. Morgan sighed softly and nodded.
"We’re fine, but things have been moving at such a pace that there are things that I need to tell her that I haven’t had the chance to. There are parts of my past that I would much rather have her hear from me than from some gossiping socialite." Isabelle reached out to pat Morgan soothingly on the arm.
"We understand, Morgan dear. You take whatever time you need to make sure that the two of you are comfortable with each other. I’m sure the last few weeks have been nothing short of tumultuous for the two of you, and there’s much you need to learn about one another." Morgan nodded in grateful agreement at Isabelle.
"That’s it exactly. And she’s been through so much…and I think there are things that she went through that she has yet to tell me about." Morgan’s brows tugged together in a deep frown and she met Isabelle’s eyes worriedly. "She keeps having nightmares, but she won’t tell me what they’re about." George nodded slightly and glanced up at his wife.
"Take her up to your cabin, Morgan, and don’t worry about coming down until you both feel that everything is out in the open," George said firmly. The sound of heels on wood drew the eyes of all three of them and a smile lit up Morgan’s face as Allison peeked her head in the door.
George, have you seen….oh! Morgan, there you are!" Allison slipped into the room and walked over to tuck herself against her lover’s side. The taller woman brushed a tender kiss against Allison’s temple and smiled at their two friends.
"Thank you both for understanding," she said quietly and led Allison away. The redhead glanced over her shoulder at their hosts and smiled uncertainly, waving at them as Morgan urged her through the door.
"Understanding what, Morgan?" she asked quietly. Morgan pulled them to a halt halfway down the hallway and pulled Allison into her arms for a slow, thorough, heartfelt kiss. As she pulled back the redhead looked up at her breathlessly, her cheeks flushed and her eyes dark with passion.
"Kissing me senseless won’t get you out of answering the question, love," she remarked huskily and reached up to pull Morgan into another kiss. Morgan laughed deep in her throat and leaned against the wall, opening her eyes to gaze lovingly into Allison’s.
"I was thanking them for understanding that I need to take you away for a couple of days." An elegant eyebrow arched in surprise and Morgan smiled down at her lover. "Would you like to spend a couple of days up at the cabin with me, my dear Allison," she asked softly. Green eyes widened in surprise and a delighted smile curved Allison’s lips as she reached up to hug Morgan tightly.
"I would like nothing better."
Allison waved at the Stromwells and turned to look over Morgan’s shoulder as they made their way down the drive. Wrapping her arms more securely around her lover’s waist she laid her cheek again Morgan’s shoulder and sighed contently, idly watching the scenery pass. A second horse followed, its back laden with supplies for their stay at the cabin, and the redhead found herself grateful that it was being used as a packhorse so she could stay close to her lover. Three days had passed since the momentous announcement at the Stromwells’ gala and the two of them had spent most of that time responding to well-wishers and gracefully turning down invitations. Carolyn had gone to ground, holing herself up in her hotel, and no one had heard from her since.
As they reached the edge of town Morgan looked over her shoulder at Allison and met her eyes with a grin, then let Mercury set his own pace. The two horses thundered up the road, grasses whipping at their legs and Allison laughed as her hair was lifted in the breeze. Morgan held onto her hands with one of her own, a happy smile curving her lips as she glanced back at her lover. She knew their time spent at the cabin would have some rocky moments, just as the last visit had, but she knew there would be some wonderful reenactments of their times there as well. As Mercury’s hooves carried them closer to their destination she relaxed, looking forward to some time alone with Allison before returning to the port and the new lives waiting for both of them.
