Allison's head swung up in shock as the door to the room was thrust open and slammed shut by the subject of her tumultuous thoughts. Morgan kicked her boots off, sending them flying across the room and threw her belt at her trunk, taking care to set the pistol carefully down. She paced the room restlessly and Allison could see that she was more than just irritated, she looked furious. She was mumbling under her breath as she paced, Carolyn's name uttered every so often like a curse. Allison set her journal on the side table and stood up.

"Morgan?" The woman glanced up at her, looking briefly surprised that she wasn't alone in the room.

"Afternoon, Allison."

"What happened?" Allison cocked her head at the captain as she stopped in front of her.

"What happened? What didn't happen is a more appropriate question!"

"Did you find out who tried to hurt your ship?" Allison asked hesitantly. Morgan nodded sharply.

"Oh yes, I certainly did. That TRAMP downstairs hired a couple of thugs to do it. Told them to make sure it sank." Allison's eyes widened in alarm.

"But why would she do that???" Morgan smiled humorlessly.

"I don't know. So after getting back here I went to see her. Oh, and why were you out of the room??" Allison jumped and shot Morgan a contrite look. "Never mind, don't worry about it. I went to see her and when I walk in I find her with her arms around this man and his hands - anyways, it certainly wasn't innocent by any stretch of the imagination. So. I tell her that she can find someone else to escort her to the dinner...and when she tries to explain I asked her to explain why she tried to have my ship sunk. I think I caught her off-guard with that one. She thinks she's so secretive. She uses the same couple of thugs for all of her dirty work. So I paid for the room and left." Allison listened as Morgan started pacing again. "I am so furious! I just want to go back down there and hurt her!" Allison hurried to Morgan's side and stopped her, grabbing her hands and looking up into Morgan's flashing blue eyes. The muscles in the older woman's jaw jumped. Allison took a deep breath.

"I'm sorry she cheated on you, Morgan. I know that had to hurt terr-," she jumped a little as Morgan snorted. She reached out a finger and brushed it against Allison's cheek.

"Allison, I'm more upset about the ship than anything. It doesn't surprise me one bit that she's fooled around. It does surprise me that she's doing it when I'm not out at sea, but that's not the worst part. She's trying to ruin me." Some tension eased out of Morgan's shoulder as Allison ran her fingers softly up and down her forearm.

"Morgan, maybe you should go to the dinner anyways." Allison held a hand up as Morgan's eyebrows shot up in startlement. "Wait...hear me out. The Harbormaster runs the town, right?" Morgan nodded. "Have you had much to do with him before?" Morgan chuckled.

"Oh yes. We've done quite a bit of business over the years. When I first got the ship he was dock master, and wanted very much to buy his wife gifts. Well, the position provided enough for him to live somewhat comfortably, but definitely not so much that he could afford the silks and satins that his wife adored. So we did a bit of dealing...I'd provide him with the things he wished for cheaper than he could get anywhere else, and he would take care of issues that would arise with my....profession." Morgan frowned for a moment, deep in thought. Allison cocked her head a little.

"When was the last time that you went to see him?" Morgan shook her head and looked at her.

"Hmmm....it's probably been half a year....perhaps you're right. Maybe I should go. But what if I see Carolyn?" Allison shrugged.

"Ignore her?" Morgan shook her head.

"No...that won't work. Everyone will still assume that we're there together...and I don't think I could even stomach that thought right now." Allison felt a little jolt of happiness go through her. Morgan moved away and started pacing again. "I need to present a division between us. And as soon as I walk in she's going to attach herself to me like a barnacle, thinking that I wouldn't make a scene..." Allison stood back as Morgan walked the length of the room and back, then stopped suddenly and looked at her. Giving Allison an odd look, she nodded slowly. "That would work. It would show that we were definitely not together...
