The World Ends At Noon
When I wake up in the hospital I know I have to tell them.
“Devyn, honey, are you ok?” My mother hugs me. I want to say something. The words are there but,
nothing.
“Oi gavol! Why are you still not talking? You’re in the hospital for Pete’s sake!” She throws her hands up.
I open my mouth. My vocal chords are on strike.
“Talk to your mother Devyn. Please, we want the truth.” My dad stands awkwardly at the foot of my bed.
I try once more to speak, producing a raspy squeak as my throat seizes. I take a breath.
[It’s the second or third week of my sophomore year. It’s third period, Chemistry. Mr. Cole is holding up and Erlen Meyer flask when someone bursts through the door.
BAM! They collide. SMASH!
“Oh, dude, I’m so sorry!” The teacher starts to pick up the glass.
“Why are you in here?”
“I just transferred. They stuck me in Bio by mistake. I’m supposed to be in advanced Chem.” The boy smoothes down his hair.
“What’s your name?” Mr. Cole puts the glass in the trash.
“It’s Cote.”
He’s wearing a purple winged heart shirt and purple-splotched skinny jeans.
“First row, middle table.”
Aw man, that’s my table.
When he gets closer I see that he’s not very tall, like 5’ 3” or so. He flops down in the chair next to me.
The next week
I’m at lunch reading a book.
“Uh, your name’s Devyn, right?” I nod.]
After about a month of him sitting with me we started calling each other.
[We’re on the phone.
“Do you want to hang out this weekend?”
I can tell he’s nervous. I hope that doesn’t mean he has a crush on me.
“I guess, where at?”
Don’t pick a date place.
“Borders, you know the one in the strip mall.”
I love Borders.
“Yea, totally. Saturday?”
“Alright, talk to you later.”
CLICK
He’s gone.
I’m kind of excited,
but I don’t know why.
It’s just the bookstore,
and besides
I don’t even
like boys.]

After a while we started hanging out regularly.
But then something happened.
[I close my locker and turn around.
“Oh, hey Hun. You scared me.”
Cote runs a hand through his longish black hair.
He moves closer to me pressing our lips together.
“Cote,”
He’s gone.
The next day
at lunch I confront him.
I’m not usually like this, but...
“Cote, we need to talk.”
I sit across from him.
“I know... I just...”
He rubs his eyes.
“Are you ok?”
He’s hunched over, squeezing his eyes.
“No... listen, I- can you come over
after school?”
His green eyes are teary.
“Yea, I’ll meet you at the bus loop.”]
At Cote’s house,
which is huge,
we got to his room.
I’m not sure I like where this is going.
[“Devyn, lo siento.”
He sits down on his couch
pulling me with him by the hand.
“It’s fine Hun. You’re a nice guy, but
that’s the problem.
I like girls,
I’m gay.”
My heart pauses, waiting for disaster.
“I guess that is a problem since I’m not really
a guy.”
He whispers; swiping his bangs.
“I don’t understand what that means.”
He sighs gravely.
“My real name is Cassidy.”
He says in a new voice.
I stare at him, taking this in.
“Uh, wow that’s-”
“Devyn,”
In a really cute Hispanic accent,
“don’t hate me for lying. Por favor.”
I guess this is her normal voice.
“No, I couldn’t hate you.
